“All the disappeared jewellery and ornaments of Lord Venkateswara Swamy have found their way to Chandrababu Naidu’s residences” – Vijay Sai Reddy, YSRCP MP

This claim was made by Rajya Sabha MP and YSRCP leader Vijaya Sai Reddy on 24th May 2018. In a press conference, he said: “ I have reliable information that all the disappeared jewellery and ornaments of Lord Venkateswara Swamy have found their way to Chandrababu Naidu’s residences. If the CBI or any other State police conducts raids on Chandrababu Naidu’s residences within 12 hours, all the disappeared jewellery of TTD can be recovered.”

Such bizarre allegations were dismissed by TTD Endowment Officer (EO) Anil Singhal in a press conference on when he asserted that all jewels noted in the Tiruvabharanam register were “safe and sound”. “In fact, it wasn’t a diamond at all… just a ruby,” he told media persons at Tirupati. He added that the broken pieces of the ruby were with the TTD and cited Justice M Jagannadha Rao Committee’s report to prove his point.

Later on August 28th, 2019 Anil Singhal said that an Assistant Endowment Officer (AEO) of the TTD is the custodian of the lost property after BJP leader and former TTD member G Bhanu Prakash Reddy alleged that the crown, which weighed around 5.4 kg, and some jewellery offered by devotees, had been missing since October 2017, when an audit was conducted. Anil Singhal later went on to admit that there was a shortfall of jewellery worth Rs 7.36 lakh in the treasury and that the AEO would be held responsible.

Finally, the claim by Vijay Sai Reddy has proven to be patently false and remains a mere allegation. Nonetheless, it is true, by EO Anil Singhal’s own admission that jewellery items were indeed missing.
