Major contenders in the state of Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress Party, and Telugu Desam Party announce their candidates for the Tirupati by-polls and with the announcement of the notification, have also announced their teams for the campaign. Bye-elections in Tirupati was announced after the death of YSRCP MP Balli Durga Prasada Rao and the election is scheduled to be held on April 17th.

The ruling YSRCP has announced the personal physiotherapist of Jagan Mohan Reddy Dr. M Gurumoorthy as the Tirupati by-poll candidate from YSRCP. Dr. Gurumoorthy had accompanied Jagan Mohan Reddy in his padayatra assisting him. the 36-year-old doctor doesn’t have any political experience and is a new face to politics except for his personal relationship with the YSR family. YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy wants to win massively in Tirupati with a huge majority and the strategy of the ruling party is to project the development and the welfare narratives and focus on projecting the commitment of the ruling party to the welfare of the women in the state. The Chief Minister even announced one minister for each assembly constituency in addition to the MLAs for the campaigning. Here are the allotted ministers in charge of assembly segments in the parliamentary constituency.

Perni Nani – Tirupati

Gautam Reddy – Srikalahasti

Kodali Nani – Satyavedu

Kurasala Kannababu – Sullurpeta

Balineni Srinivasa Reddy – Venkatagiri

Adimulapu Suresh – Sarvepalli

Anil kumar Yadav – Gudur

Along with them, Minister Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy is appointed as in charge of the whole Tirupati Parliament.

The opposition Telugu Desam Party is the first to sound the poll bugle by announcing Panabaka Lakshmi as its candidate for the Tirupati by-poll 3 months ahead. Panabaka lakshmi represented the 11th, 12th, 14th parliaments from Nellore Constituency and in the 15th Parliament from Bapatla Constituency. The 4 time MP unsuccessfully contested from Bapatla on a Congress ticket in 2014 and from TDP in 2019 from Tirupati. Panabaka Lakshmi was part of several parliamentary committees and worked as union minister of the state for health and family welfare, MOS for textiles, MOS for petroleum and natural gas, and worked widely in the upliftment of the downtrodden communities during her reign. The Telugu Desam Party is betting on the women’s votes and the added advantage of the experience of Panabaka Lakshmi as a parliamentarian and central minister.

TDP is mainly focusing on the price rise, women issues, TTD issues, Sand smuggling, Liquor, the highhandedness of the ruling party leaders, and the recent attacks on Dalits. TDP’s strategy is to manage the campaign at 5 levels.

Booth level

Village Level

Mandal Level

Assembly level

Parliament Level

The party appointed 89 senior leaders to take care of Tirupati by-polls, ITDP volunteers will take care of the social media campaign.

The ruling party in the center BJP is yet to announce its candidate. However, the in charge of the  BJP for Andhra Pradesh Sunil Deodar has already taken a flat on rent in Tirupati for the sake of by-polls. BJP- Janasena is having an alliance and BJP will be announcing its candidate for the by-polls. BJP’s main focus is on the image of Modi and the anti-people policies by the YSRCP, attacks on temples, Dynastic politics, etc. BJP almost finalized ex-Chief Secretary of Karnataka, Ratna Prabha as its candidate for the Tirupati by-polls, however, BJP is having a tough time with the recent hike in petrol prices, privatization of PSUs and RNIL and the Janasena party led by Pawan Kalyan’s support also seems to be in ambiguity considering BJP not allowing its candidate to contest.
