On Thursday, the President of India Mr. Ramnath Kovind issued a gazette notification appointing Arup Goswami as the new Chief Justice of AP High Court. The decision was taken in consultation with the Chief Justice of India. Meanwhile, the current Chief Justice JK Maheswari was directed to take over as the chief justice of Sikkim High Court.
Justice Arup Goswami born on 11th March 1961 in Assam graduated in law from Guwahati Government Law College and registered as a lawyer on 6th August 1985. He practiced mainly on civil, criminal, constitutional, and service related matters. He was appointed as an additional judge in Guwahati High Court in 2011 and later became permanent in 2012. He served as executive chairman of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority between 2011 to 2013, executive chairman of Assam State Legal Services Authority between 2018 to 2019, and executive chairman of Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority between 2016 to 2019.
On 15th October 2019, Mr. Goswami was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court and later got transferred to AP High Court. The notification came a day after the observations made by the current sitting judge of AP HC Rakesh Kumar that the Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy gained an undue advantage in the transfer of High Court Chief Justices.
