In the early hours of Thursday, a fire broke out in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). RINL is a central government undertaking. The fire broke out in the power plant section of the steel plant. The plant is situated in Paravada and lies on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam.
Reports indicate the fire was reported at around 4 – 4:30 a.m.; there were no casualties reported. Unconfirmed reports indicate there was financial loss of about a few crores because of damages sustained by the plant’s machinery.
There are two main thermal power plants in the steel plant – one generating 243 MW and another 120 MW. A source from within the plant shared – “The fire was a result of leakage of lubricant in the oil pump of the 120 MW power plant, resulting in burning of the turbine.”
The production in the steel plant remains unaffected, however, reports indicate that during the repairs of the damaged plant machinery including the cables among other things, the plant will borrow electricity from external sources.
On July 13, a fire broke out in Visakha Solvents Limited, a chemical plant which recovers waste solvents from pharmaceutical units, located at Ramky Pharma City, close to Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
The mishap led to an explosion of a reactor in the plant leading to the death of one person and injuries to three others. In recent past, numerous events of such nature have occurred in Visakhapatnam.
