Anusha, a student at the local Krishnaveni Private College in Narasaraopet in Guntur district was killed and her body was dumped in a canal. A fellow student in the same college, Vishnuvardhan Reddy allegedly harassed and murdered her.
Reddy lied to Anusha this morning and led her to a secluded area. Angered by his suspicion that she was having an affair with someone, he allegedly strangled Anusha. According to reports, Reddy dumped her body in a canal near Palapada.
Anusha’s parents have demanded justice for their daughter and the student’s union has launched a protest in Narasaraopet. The union has demanded that immediate action be taken against the accused. The police have registered a case and investigation is learned to be underway. It remains to be seen whether the accused is punished under the Disha Act, 2019.
In the month of February itself, nearly 30 murders and 37 rapes have been recorded in Andhra Pradesh, according to the AP Police crime statistics. Crimes against women, mainly molestation and dowry-related deaths have increased in Andhra Pradesh since 2019. The Director-General of Police D Gautam Sawang has said that significant improvement is needed in this regard.
