TDP President N. Chandrababu Naidu in a statement made to the press on Thursday criticized the Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for not taking any preventive measures over the looming threat of another wave of the COVID-19 virus in Andhra Pradesh.
In his opening remarks before initiating a discussion with frontline warriors and citizens who had reported issues on APFIGHTSCORONA.COM online portal, the TDP supremo stressed that the government must look towards economic revival while strategizing about minimizing the spread of infection. In his series of discussions with citizens, one of the most striking issues was the systemic corruption in the handling of deceased coronavirus patients. Families of patients were being charged as much as 10,000 rupees for cremation in the State according to one individual’s factual account and that there were packages for paying respects to one’s loved ones.
Other discussants on Thursday included doctors who shared their experience of tackling the COVID-19 crisis. It must be noted that the Former CM N. Chandrababu Naidu had demanded an all-party JAC in the previous months to strategize an action plan for tackling the spread of coronavirus and economic revival measures in the State.
Currently, AP stands 2nd in India in terms of total infections to date and the confirmed cases per million are almost 3 times the India average. With most districts above the 50,000 mark, East Godavari has surpassed twice that with over 1,03,000 cases of infection.
A cursory glance of the website portal launched by TDP indicates that job loss is a primary concern among other issues such as non-receipt of government assistance. These issues have been reported by well over 1,000 people from all parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Sharing that the vaccine was not expected before the end of 2020, Chandrababu Naidu said that even then, the economic impact would be in force possibly for another two years. He reiterated that the government should rescue the worst-affected from this humanitarian crisis. The www.apfightscorona.com started by the TDP is a first of its kind platform in India to highlight the plight of people who lost their jobs and incomes due to COVID or are unable to get government assistance.
With numerous reports of young people getting infected and a few unverified reports of reinfection, the threat of a second wave of the virus is a real and imminent threat that must be addressed by the AP Government.
